„Four recognized pearls of chamber music. Four arguments to prove that a string quartet may appear in a beautiful form of a dialogue of four partners speaking the same voice. The same voice but in different ways. It’s time for new ‘Discoveries’: the young pearls of new music.”

Polish Cello Quartet
Program: K. Stockhausen Tierkreis (Byk), improvised cello music
Forgotten City is a series of Sunday concerts – extraordinary events – kind of happenings - that take place from May to August in ‘forgotten’ settings of Wrocław: old staircases, backyards of old Wrocław tenement houses, at the historic railway stations. In other words, everywhere, where one can still find pre-war architecture.

Polish Cello Quartet was formed on the initiative of Tomasz Daroch, Wojciech Fudala, Krzysztof Karpeta and Adam Krzeszowiec – four leading cellists of the new generation. The four artists have decided to initiate a chamber music group to show and share the unique and original sound of the cello quartet.
The musicians of PCQ had an honour and privilege to acquire their skills from leading Polish cello musicians such as Paweł Głombik and Stanisław Firlej, and also from world-leading professors such as Frans Helmerson, Gary Hoffman, Michael Flaksman, Jelena Očić, Julius Berger and Jeroen Reuling. The musicians of PCQ have gained their experience in many European cultural centers e.g. Cologne, Mannheim and Brussels. Each of the artists has often been awarded in solo and chamber performances. All PCQ members lead cello classes at the renowned Polish Music Academies.
Polish Cello Quartet can be seen performing at many international music festivals, including Wratislavia Cantans, Internationaal Kamermuziekfestival Schiermonnikoog, Assiago Festival, Q’arto Mondi and Jazztopad. The group has collaborated with many great and highly regarded musicians – both classical and jazz, among others: Gary Hoffman, Julius Berger, Jadwiga Rappé, Dominik Połoński, Tony Mallaby, Nate Wooley.
Their repertoire mostly consists of pieces which were originally composed for a cello quartet. The repertoire is still being enriched with modern compositions by Polish and foreign composers, such as Artur Zagajewski, Piotr Moss and Annelise Van Parys or Alice Hebborn. Most of these compositions has never before been performed in Poland. Since 2011 they have premiered more than twenty new compositions. Since 2014 the Quartet became an ensemble in residence in National Forum of Music in Wroclaw.
In the way they perform, the artists have chosen a democratic model of cooperation. Within the group they exchange parts of music pieces they play – which allows to alter the sound and interpretation of the pieces.
The members of PCQ are the founders and organizers of the International Cello Academy in Nysa (Poland). Every year in July ICA gathers students from all over the world. Its mission is to promote chamber music written exclusively for cellos.
The debut album of the PCQ “Discoveries” (CD Accord) appeared in 2017.
In 2019 appeared their recording of Grażyna Bacewicz’s Cello Quartet released on CD by Chandos label with other chamber music pieces by the composer. It was awarded by a prestigious Fryderyk Music Award for the best recording of polish music.
International Cello Academy
Nysa
Members of the Polish Cello Quartet, being graduates of Polish and foreign Academies, as a result of a number of reflections that followed many conversations with our younger colleagues and fellow professors from all around the World, have come up with a new proposal of music courses. As a cello group, we breathe cello music, we live by the music and we are willing to share our knowledge and experience with all the young musicians who wish to develop their talents and skills. That is why, we have created the International Cello Academy.
The International Cello Academy (ICA) has the form of music workshops for students of second level Music Schools preparing for any entrance exams to Music Academies and for those who already are Music Academy students. The main idea behind the project, is to give young musicians an opportunity to work with distinguished foreign professors as well as the members of the Polish Cello Quartet, which is made up of outstanding, young Polish cellists.
ICA aims at promoting playing chamber cello music among young artists. The tradition of chamber music used to be very popular in the previous century, propagated, among others, by Pablo Casals at Prades Festival (France) and Puerto Rico Festival. Presently, the successors of the tradition in Europe are: Valter Despalij and friends of the PCQ: Giovanni Sollima, Gary Hoffman and Michael Flaksman. By promoting this kind of music in Poland, the Polish Cello Quartet wishes to show the young cello musicians the richness of the cello chamber music and encourage them to reach more frequently for this unique, although not easy, chamber music literature.
At the Cello Academy, its participants will have the opportunity to take part in hour-long individual classes almost daily as well as longer classes of cello chamber music. 4 solo classes and chamber music classes taught by one of the PCQ members are guaranteed to all participants by the organizers. We also encourage teachers and students majoring in different areas of music to participate in solo and chamber music classes as observers or auditors. You are also welcome to take part in the lecturers of the International Cello Academy.
